For the moment, Whittier Greenway Trail in Whittier CA seems my new venue for my Xootr scooter rides. 6.4 miles round trip, down to Greenleaf Avenue and back.
A nice hour’s ride, plus a few minutes for water and a power bar at the turn-around point. Mostly shaded by friendly trees, no pesky underpasses, and generally smooth pavement. There are even bathroom facilities at my starting point at Guirado Park.
This morning, I wondered, driving twenty-five minutes from home to Guirado Park, why am I doing this? What’s the point? The answer hit me after the ride.
Worries:
Do you have anything that worries you, that you fret about, that sometimes causes you to lose sleep? Money troubles? Taxes? Debts? Relationship problems? Health issues? The upcoming elections?
And how do you deal with it? Do you over eat? Do you snort cocaine, inject meth, get drunk, or tune out by watching TV?
Do you ever think, how can I just live in this moment, and find my own truth and serenity in the crazy world we live in? Right now?
Listen up
There’s a way, a chance to find your mental tranquility without wasting hours on the cyber world or pretending to have a life playing games on your cell phone.
After today’s ride, it hit me that my Xootr scooter rides provided a chance to turn off all the worries and concerns that beset me, that beset all of us, and simply focus on the beauty and the pleasure of the scooter ride. Twenty scoots on one foot. Twenty scoots on the other.
That’s one
I get up to ten, I start again. This ride is ten and change down, ten and a bit more change riding back, because it’s a tiny bit uphill.
I finished my ride, and realized my ride was all I’d been thinking about for more than an hour. Focus. Clear thoughts. Mental calm. It felt good.
You should try it. I have an extra scooter. Call me. Any time.

Loved your article. Being by yourself and nature is my therapy. That’s where I can’t understand why people are always on their phones while walking. It’s a solo adventure as far as I’m concerned. Glad you had a good ride. I have a few friends and relatives who have written books and I love having the books as I know the person. I will look up your books and get myself one. Maybe you can autograph it fir me some day. Happy trails. Patty Baker.
