Trail Of Life Ride With A Xootr Scooter

This trail of life ride with a Xootr scooter on the Whittier Greenway Trail in Whittier, CA happened on the morning of Super Sunday, with Jorge on his Xootr Mg scooter, me on my new Xootr Street scooter, and Jorge’s son Chris on his electric scooter, zipping ahead of us.

The weather’s perfect, long sleeve cool, with a felt vest. And shorts. Jorge had a test ride on the Xootr Street scooter, and decided on the spot to buy one for his son in law.

What’s now my scooter in reserve, my Xootr Mg, is packed away in a shipping box in the cellar, to be used as needed. I drive my car with the new Xootr Street scooter stowed in the usual scooter location, on the floor behind the driver’s seat.

While Jorge was test riding my Street scooter, I followed on his Xootr Mg. I’d wondered if my perception of the Street as riding noiselessly was a figment of my imagination, but really, it’s true. The Mg rides great, but generates subtle sounds.

The Street glides along in spooky silence! This was my second ride on the Street. After the first ride, I’d thought, well maybe I’ll keep the Mg at the ready and ride one, and then the other, but on today’s ride I decided for sure, the Street is my primo scooter, the one I’m going to ride every day I can. I love it.

Scooting 3.2 miles down the trail

So, the ride was good. We scooted about 3.2 miles down the trail, to Greenleaf Avenue. Jorge and I were ready to go to the end of the trail at Mills Avenue, almost another two miles, but his son made the call to turn around.

During the ride, Jorge and I compared notes about our perceptions of Covid in our Los Angeles community, about our recent first stage vaccinations, about the recent election, the Super Bowl, and daily life for people in Jorge’s native Cuba.

A celebration of existence

At the end of the day, our ride was our celebration of our existence, getting out in the world and experiencing it by real movement along the Trail of Life.

Jonathan Kelley
Jonathan Kelley, 80, was born in Boston, and educated at Exeter and Princeton, then Harvard Medical School, after a year teaching English in Cali, Colombia. He was a Navy anesthesiologist during Viet Nam. He spent the middle decades of his life working in a community hospital in Northern California. Besides his career in medicine, he’s a chef, pianist, and actor in his artistic life. In the kitchen, he specializes in croissants and cooking with coconuts. At the piano, it’s boogie woogie and Joplin rags. As an actor, he’s done fourteen seasons in a Mexican Christmas play in Los Angeles, plus the occasional movie role, as in the soon-to-be-released feature film “Amor en 266 Millas,” where he plays the hippie patriarch of a desert commune in the Antelope Valley. He has two books available on Amazon, “Counting Backwards from 100: My Life as an Anesthesiologist,” and “Short Stories by Jonathan Kelley.” Searching for improved balance and leg strength at age 77, Jonathan came by chance upon a Xootr scooter. Jonathan’s wife is the lovely Puerto Rican actress Gloria Laino. Their mix is like Puerto Rican arroz con gandules served next to New England style cranberry sauce.
