Switzerland’s Stromer has been making high-end, class-3, city e-bikes since the brand started in 2009. The Stromer ST3, known as the speed pedelec for commuters, comes in at over nine grand, and it’s not even Stromer’s top-of-the-line model (that’s the ST5, which starts at $10,499).

Stromer ST3: A high end eBike for commuters
The Stromer brand designs everything on their bikes. They design their own hub motors, motor controls, and rider interface. All Stromer models feature an integrated battery, integrated lights, and Bluetooth connectivity.
Connectivity via 3G technology
The Stromer ST3 uses the brand’s OMNI connect interface, a wireless touchscreen in the top tube that controls the bike’s functions – whether directly from touchscreen or through the Stromer app on your smartphone. From your phone, you can track your bike’s location, get an overview of your ride data, activate Stromer’s anti-theft mode, and remotely lock and unlock your bike, among other things.
OMNI also connects to mobile data networks, so Stromer can perform diagnostics, push out updates, and notify you if someone tries to move your bike (or track it if it does get stolen). And if you forget the self-selected PIN code, Stromer can unlock your bike for you.
Customizable, comfortable riding position
All Stromer bikes can be customized on the brands website with a base price of $7,499.
You can upgrade from the stock 814Wh battery (with a claimed range of up to 90 miles) for $500.
There’s also a suspension fork ($1,099) available instead of the stock rigid aluminum fork, which will add some welcome comfort and control.
These options will add nearly 70 pounds to the ST3’s weight, making it harder to push while walking.
But the Stromer ST3 is a highly refined e-bike, that shows off Stromer’s extensive experience and knowledge of building e-bikes. The handling is excellent, unlike other class-3 e-bike’s that feel under-built. With twitchy steering, as if someone slapped a powerful motor onto a regular bike.
You will immediately be able to tell that the Stromer ST3 is a bike built up to be a class-3 e-bike. It’s reassuringly solid, and the brakes are appropriately powerful for quick stopping a 70-pound bike traveling at almost 30mph. It’s stable at high speeds. Steers smoothly and accurately. And it’s heavy and fast yet nimble.
Powerful rear-wheel motor with assistance
The hub motor is quiet, smooth, and strong – though not as powerful as some mid-drives. And unlike a mid-drive, this one has regenerative braking, which converts your kinetic energy to electrical energy and feeds it back into the battery.
Pull the brake levers and the rear light blinks brighter, helpful for letting cars know your next move. It’s horn is powerful enough to cut through earphones of pedestrians and other cyclists on the bike path.
The Stromer ST3 is expensive, but it’s meant to be a daily driver, that’s built like a tank.
