Reflect on change. On change for all of us, throughout history.
A kid on a kick scooter appeared way ahead of his time, in a 1922 movie in black and white, “A Trip Through the Streets of Amsterdam.” It’s on YouTube.

Reflect on change of human-powered devices
Consider the exponential development of human-powered wheeled devices since then: the evolving racing bicycles ridden in the Tour de France, the folding kick scooters of recent decades, scooters developed for different types of riding, like the Yedoo Dragster with its big front wheel for urban commuting that can handle pavement defects; consider roller blades, skate boards, and more.
Stand in awe of Jim Delzer, who in 2001, at age 44, rode a kick scooter across the USA, averaging 100 miles per day.
Gasp at the insane feats of young kids on kick scooters in skateboard parks.
Take a look at me, at 81
Me, at 81, with my Xootr Street kick scooter: I feel like I’m operating a skate board with steering and balance control. Or I could call it my walker on wheels! Either way, it’s amazing exercise.
And reflect on where we’re going with all of this. What will our grandkids ride? Electric bikes or scooter hybrids? And where? On the sidewalk? In the street? Think of the Lime and Bird electric scooters zipping along the streets and sidewalks in Santa Monica.
The game is rapidly changing
Clearly, this is a rapidly changing game, the rules of which have yet to be defined. And right now, with all the powered bikes on the no-powered-devices bike trails around Los Angeles, it’s Katie bar the door! Anything goes. The Wild West. All we can predict with certainty is that the future is uncertain.
Off I go
For now, for today, I’m off for a ride out of Santa Fé Springs Park on the San Gabriel River Trail, down to Byron Zinn Park for an easy ride, or maybe as far as Bellflower Caruthers Park near the 91 for an iron man ride.
I hope to run into some of my trail buddies, a 66 year old guy named Alfred who rides on roller blades, or maybe my Guatemalan friends Saint Damaris and her husband Pablo.
