Ramona Boulevard to Thienes Avenue, El Monte

Ramona Boulevard to Thienes Avenue, in El Monte, CA. along the San Gabriel River Trail. 6.6 miles RT.

This was an unusually fun ride in that my Xootr scooter buddy Jorge accompanied me

It was a Saturday morning, with many bicyclists on the trail, two of whom gave us a thumbs up sign as they rode by. Somehow because there were two of us on the scooters, Jorge and me, the cyclists took notice when they passed us. Nice to see their thumbs up. It continues to puzzle me that we see so few other adults riding kick scooters.

Near our starting point on Ramona Boulevard is Radio Guadalupe

A Catholic Spanish- language radio station that sponsors a big yearly production of “Cristo Vive,” a Passion Play portraying the life of Christ, usually in a big theater in downtown LA. Cast of at least 100.

My wife has coached the guy who plays Jesus. He’s been to the house, and, well, he’s completely believable. But not this year, with Covid-19. Production was cancelled within days of showtime.

At the trailhead I greet a homeless guy I’ve seen before

The guy who’d said “Hi, Grandpa!” to me a month ago. He’s standing there with his heap of junk, and remembers me.
On this section of the trail, the San Gabriel River bed is wide, and not completely tamed. There’s low dried vegetation in the river bed, and trees. We see some tents of homeless people, and a single fisherman where the river widens.

Farther down, just before Thienes Avenue, we scoot past a string of dusty corrals with horses

Jorge and I resolve the political issues of the day, the social distancing, masks, quarantine, and protests, plus our guesses about how this will all end. Jorge has several relatives in Miami who’ve had Covid; all have recovered without complications.
It all felt good, and I look forward to our next ride together.

At the piano, it’s boogie woogie and Joplin rags. He has two books available on Amazon, “Counting Backwards from 100: My Life as an Anesthesiologist,” and “Short Stories by Jonathan Kelley.” Searching for improved balance and leg strength at age 77, Jonathan came by chance upon a Xootr scooter. Jonathan’s wife is the lovely Puerto Rican actress Gloria Laino. Their mix is like Puerto Rican arroz con gandules served next to New England style cranberry sauce.
