Postpone and Delay, or Just Do It! Peck Road Park to Fletcher Park in El Monte, CA, again, on the Xootr kick scooter.
Yes, I have this adventure planned, where i’m going to ride the bike trails of Los Angeles from mountains to seashore. But today, same as my most recent ride, because of the 90° heat, the Azusa fires, and the need to attend to some household chores as well as buy groceries, it’s a repeat of the 6 mile Peck Road Park ride.
Close to home. All doable by noon
Every ride’s different, even covering the same ground. For inexplicable reasons, everyone I pass today greets me not with the usual impersonal nod, but today, with a “Good morning, sir!” or “Hello there!” Throw in an attractive young Asian lady out for a run on the trail, add a dose of withering heat, plus a homeless guy asleep beside the trail at a shaded underpass, and cars of a freight train stopped on a railroad bridge I scoot under, and there you have it.
The ride felt good, and I was glad to have done it, even though by the end, at 11:00 am, the temperature had climbed above 90° and I was counting the scoots it’d take me to get back to the parking lot before I passed out, even after consuming the jug of water I’d brought. 80 scoots to go. 60 scoots to go. A bit of downhill on the final leg. Can I make it?
Well, I did
And I’m reminded again, you gotta get up and go. It’s easy to say no, let’s wait till the weather’s cooler; let’s wait till the fires are out, let’s wait till the quarantine ends. Let’s wait till this, and let’s wait till that. That all adds up to let’s not, and then it’s gone.
Postpone and Delay, or Just Do It!
I’m not going to let it go. My Xootr scooter rides represent life to me. I’m going to do it as long as I can. Heat, cold, fire, smoke: be damned. But don’t ride in the rain, and not after dark!
