Know Your Limits On A Kick Scooter Ride

My friend Jorge and I scheduled a kick scooter ride for today along the San Gabriel River Trail, from Bellflower Caruthers Park south to Rynerson Park in Lakewood, and back. Three miles each way.

5% chance of rain, but we decided to take a chance. It was cool and overcast, with no wind, and not a drop of rain. Perfect riding conditions.

I arrived at our rendezvous point fifteen minutes early, and had time to check out by the footbridge to the trail a skateboard park I’d seen before when riding from here. The skateboard park is two smoothly paved basins, totaling up to about half a football field size.

The skateboards

There were some young guys with skateboards there, doing fascinating loops and jumps, even skidding intentionally along the steel rim of one of the basins. A beautiful young black teenage girl, with short-trimmed dyed blonde hair, and wearing black slacks and a black halter top practiced on roller skates, performing some amazingly fluid looping turns.

At the skateboard park basin

Scooter at my side, I spoke with several of these young people, and joked about how riding the skateboard park basin on a kick scooter looked interesting, and would surely be rideable and fun, but maybe just not be the activity best suited for me at this stage of my life!

On the 8’ wide trail

Jorge and I enjoyed a great ride, although the Sunday bicycle traffic on the 8’ wide trail required our keeping a constant eye out. We’d hear a bicyclist shout “On your left!” and then one, two, or ten of them would zoom past, sometimes side by side half an arm’s length from us.

Trickiest were the steeply curved underpasses, where on at least two of them squads of bicyclists would come rip roaring down towards us from the opposite direction.

But we were careful. We kept the pace manageable and fun, with energy left over to talk over the issues of the day.
The skateboard park? Maybe not for me. Not now. Know your limitations!

He was a Navy anesthesiologist during Viet Nam. He spent the middle decades of his life working in a community hospital in Northern California. Besides his career in medicine, he’s a chef, pianist, and actor in his artistic life. In the kitchen, he specializes in croissants and cooking with coconuts. At the piano, it’s boogie woogie and Joplin rags. As an actor, he’s done fourteen seasons in a Mexican Christmas play in Los Angeles, plus the occasional movie role, as in the soon-to-be-released feature film “Amor en 266 Millas,” where he plays the hippie patriarch of a desert commune in the Antelope Valley. He has two books available on Amazon, “Counting Backwards from 100: My Life as an Anesthesiologist,” and “Short Stories by Jonathan Kelley.” Searching for improved balance and leg strength at age 77, Jonathan came by chance upon a Xootr scooter. Jonathan’s wife is the lovely Puerto Rican actress Gloria Laino. Their mix is like Puerto Rican arroz con gandules served next to New England style cranberry sauce.
