I was out riding my Tern Link D8 folding bike and out of nowhere my dad (A.K.A Big Unc) showed up with his Dahon Speed P8. While these folding bikes are much different in many ways, they still have a few things in common.
Both these folding bikes have 20-inch wheels. 8-gears that make them experts at climbing hills, ( despite the myth that folding bikes are difficult to ride up hills) and provide respectable speeds on the flats and downhill. I once had a guy try to argue with me about how folding bikes are slower than regular bikes. Instead of arguing back I just looked at him and smiled because dad and I know otherwise.
If you think folding bikes are slow, just ask the multiple hybrids and 10-speeds I pass up on a daily basis. And while you’re at it, ask the guys who are walking their bikes up hills while I’m cruising past them as if the hills don’t even exist. Wheel size doesn’t matter anymore because bikes now have gears, unlike the Penny Farthings that are now extinct just like the dinosaurs.
On this particular day dad met up with me on the way to Downtown Rochester, New York.
We then proceeded to our next stop which is a coffee shop that I introduced to dad a while back.
Folding is another great benefit that both these bikes have in common. Dad loves Boulder Coffee Co. because there’s plenty of space, the staff is friendly, and they allow us to bring our bikes inside. Being able to bring our bikes inside is a bike thief’s worst nightmare. TAKE THAT BIKE THIEF!!!!
As I glanced down for a brief second, dad suddenly disappeared like the FLASH! You’d never guess where he ran off to.
After what seemed like an eternity, dad returned and you’ll never guess what he was carrying in both hands.
The Dahon Speed P8 and Tern Link D8 fit perfectly into our busy urban lifestyles.
Dahon is the older brand, founded in 1982 by David T. Hon, a former laser physicist.
Tern was founded in 2011 by Florence Shen and Joshua Hon, wife and son of David T. Hon.
While both brands are different, both offer exceptional folding bikes. It all depends upon your personal preferences.
