Lario Park, on my Xootr Mg adult kick scooter, again, in Irwindale, east of Los Angeles, just north of the 210.
I like the good pavement, the absence of underpasses, the steady climb up, and the easy descent. Today’s ride: 5.4 miles. 660 scoots up, 220 scoots back. Average speed 6.9 mph.
At the trailhead
At 9:30 am, about a dozen homeless people, men and women, await the arrival of the food ladies with lunch. One of the guys gives me a cordial good morning greeting, with a wink and a smile, as I walk past him on the few yards towards the gate that opens to the bike trail.
What I like best about these rides is that it’s my interval in the day when I feel great, no back pain, knees and feet functioning well, balance good. It’s my hour when everything’s AOK. As good as it gets.
Today, at the top of the trail, my brain lets me take a conscious look at the charred earth from the Azusa fires of a few weeks ago. It’s remarkable that the fire fighters prevented any houses from burning down.
The ride has a rhythm, a tempo
Just like all the others. A tiny fractal of my life. Another stitch or two in my tapestry, such as it is. With a beginning and an ending in both the immediate frame of this day as well as in the total piece of work, however it may finish up.
You readers, particularly you older readers… really, give this a try
It’s fun, and you’ll feel good while you’re doing it.
Don’t get stalled in the mindset that you’re too old for a kick scooter, or you’ll find you’re too old for a kick scooter. I got mine at 77.
Don’t tell me you can’t, no matter what your age
Next time you pass a scooter store, go in, and ask the sales people if you can ride one around the showroom floor. Tune in to a real scooter store, like the Vault Pro Scooters, in Culver City, CA.
Not Target, and not Walmart, which offer the lowest priced scooters, the Razors with the micro sized wheels for the 6 year olds. No. You, the adult, deserve to try the elegant and graceful Xootr Mg adult kick scooter. Just do it. Today.
