This Xootr MG kick scooter ride happened September 18, 2020.
A few weeks of heavy overlay of smoke from the Bobcat Fire in the San Gabriel Mountains northeast of Pasadena CA has slowed trail enthusiasts like me from our normal exercise rhythms.
Today, for the first time in weeks, I see broken clouds overhead upon arising, and figure that today finally will be a good day for a Xootr Mg kick scooter ride
I make my starting point at the Pico Rivera Golf Course in Pico Rivera, which opens directly onto the San Gabriel River Trail a dozen or so miles south of Pasadena, just below the Whittier Narrows Dam.
I’d ridden through here before, once on a 22 mile marathon ride from City of Hope in Duarte to the Norwalk Green Line two years ago, to see if I could do it. I did, but it was a killer ride, three and a half hours. On this day I wanted something easier, maybe an hour in all.
The Whittier Greenway Trail, which I’d also ridden some months ago, goes southeast from near Pico Rivera, on the east side of the 605
I knew there was a connection, and decided today to take it, between Whittier Greenway and the San Gabriel River Trail. It turned out to be about a mile from one trail to the other, all uphill in one direction on so-so sidewalk pavement along Beverly Boulevard, and no clear road signs the last few blocks to the Whittier trail, but fortunately I’d ridden the trail before and had a good sense of where it started.
On the Whittier part of the ride, I saw many bicyclists, lots of pedestrians out with their partners and their dogs, and no homeless people, for a change
Riding the Whittier trail seemed like work. I couldn’t figure out why, until after my turnaround when I realized it’d all been slightly uphill, which I gained back in a nearly free coast for a mile or so.
I saw an older guy like me on the trail, out walking his dog. Couldn’t help but ask him his age. 83, he said. And looking good.
With a cool little dog. It buoyed my optimism that at 80 that I might yet have a few rides left in me.
